Meet the Lab.

Haven Johansen

Research Assistant
Yale University

Haven is an MPH student in the Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases program and a research assistant in the Carlson lab. They currently support lab work on health attribution studies and climate-sensitive arboviruses. They are interested in the intersections between climate change, infectious diseases, and health equity, and they love learning about vector-borne and zoonotic pathogens. They are excited about using quantitative tools and interdisciplinary collaboration to protect the most vulnerable members of our communities from the effects of environmental and climate crises.

Haven studied ciliary calcium dynamics as an undergraduate at Western Washington University, where they earned a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. examining reproductive health through the lenses of reproductive justice, environmental justice, and cellular biology. They also studied the spread of antibiotic resistance genes in the coastal microbiome of Southern California as an NSF-REU Summer Scholar.

When they’re not studying or working, Haven likes watching horror movies, dancing, swimming, reading poetry, eating good food with people they love, and working to help save the Great Salt Lake.
